Very Useful, Decent Quality
This set is extremely useful for pattern drafting. The curves are a very complete set for large-scale drafting. I am not a professional patternmaker or designer, but that's mostly what I use this set for. The rules are brushed aluminum (.040" thick) with silkscreened numbers. The edges are slightly rough, so they do have an abrasive effect on marking instruments. There is almost no glare off the face of the rules. They seem precise and well made.
That being said, I wouldn't use any of these as an edge for guiding a cutter. They are too soft, and would be damaged over time. If they were made of a harder material like tempered stainless, the price would easily be tripled. I can't complain, especially considering they were made in the US.
The case is also well made, although I had to sew an organizer for the interior so the rules wouldn't get damaged in transport. The awl is as good as an awl can be (very solid). The compass is pretty bad although it works and I use it for non-critical things. It's kind of handy for seam allowances. The tape is actually pretty nice; it's very flexible and light, and it doesn't stretch. I don't think I'm qualified to review the book, although it would be better described as a pamphlet.
